Yet More JC and Bruce

Yet More JC and Bruce

I’m getting home from another interminable planning meeting with the Gotham Police Department. When do we get to fight criminals?

“Hey, how was work?” He’s calling from the room we fixed up as an office for him.

“It could have been better. Shall I ask Alfred to whip us up some dinner?”

“In a minute. I just need to finish this – Oh, rats!”

I walk in and he is intent on the computer screen. It might be the first time I’ve seen him so focused on it. “What’s up?”

“I almost beat level twelve. Okay, just one more try.”

We are waiting in line at the grocery store.

“How often would you say we have meaningful conversations?” I look at Bruce. That is not the kind of thing he usually asks me. Then I notice the magazine he is holding. It says, “Take our compatibility quiz! Find out if you are soulmates!” I want to make a joke, but he looks serious.

“All the time? I don’t think any of our conversations are meaningless. Do you?”

“Hmm,” he says. “When we disagree, how do we typically resolve it?”

I whisper in his ear. I like to see him blush.

“My New Year’s resolution is to clean up crime in Gotham City.”

“Wasn’t that your resolution last year? Mine is to love my neighbor as myself.”

“That one was yours last year.”

It gets quiet while we think.

I have an inspiration. “How about we swap this year? You can resolve to clean up crime and I will love my neighbor as myself.”

“Even if your neighbor is a criminal?”

“Yeah, well, that would be pretty hard.”

“Maybe this year, we can just skip the resolutions.”

“Or we can both resolve to be better about flossing.”

“Yeah, let’s do that.”
